Laboratory Requirement
- Undergraduate composition majors must participate in a music laboratory (MULB) each semester they are enrolled, and must complete eight semesters of laboratory requirements including at least four semesters of band, orchestra, or choir. Composers enrolled in the BA Music program are required to be enrolled in a music laboratory for only six semesters during the course of their degree.
- Composition majors in good standing who have met the following criteria will be eligible to enroll in MUEN (ensemble) or MUCM (chamber music) courses to fulfill the laboratory requirement for the degree:
- Placement in Advanced Composition (MUCP 3180-90, 4180-90).
- Completion of at least four semesters of MULB courses.
- Ensemble substitutions must be approved by the composition division chair prior to each semester of enrollment.
- Students on scholarship for a particular laboratory ensemble (e.g., wind ensembles, orchestra) must meet all enrollment requirements of the scholarship and, therefore, will not be eligible to substitute MUEN or MUCM courses without forfeiting their scholarship.
- Students who change their majors out of BM Composition (whether by choice or as a result of disqualification from the program) after substituting MUEN and/or MUCM courses for the laboratory requirements may be obligated to make up any unfulfilled MULB requirements in the new degree plan at the discretion of the major area.
