Graduate composer Christopher Poovey will have his piece Dripstone, for baritone saxophone and stereo fixed media,​ performed on 15 October 2016 at the Jayu Theater in the Seoul Arts Center as part of the 2016 Seoul International Computer Music Festival.

Doctoral composer Michael Smith has recently had his work Ictus (2-channel fixed media) selected for performance at numerous events in 2016, including the Bowling Green Graduate Student Conference, the National Student Electronic Music Event (N_SEME), Electronic Music Midwest (EMM), Ars Electronica @ Forum Wallis, and at the Open Circuit Electronic Music and Video Art Showcase, where he was selected as a finalist in their electroacoustic competition.

Jon Christopher Nelson has had two works selected for programming at the International Computer Music Conference in Utrecht, Netherlands, on 12-15 September 2016: Illusory Lines for 8-channel fixed media and Inside a Cloud of Butterflies for classical guitar and interactive electronics. The international jury selected 116 compositions for performance from approximately 600 submissions. Nelson's Inside a Cloud of Butterflies is also one of 11 works selected for inclusion on the conference recording featuring the highest ranking compositions.

Alumnus composer Sam Melnick (BM 2015) was selected as one of eight finalists (out of over 60 submissions from 13 countries) in Novus New Music, Inc's first annual call for scores (2016).

Doctoral composer Seth Shafer presented his paper titled "Performance Practice of Real-Time Notation" at the Second International Conference on Technologies for Music Notation and Representation in Cambridge, UK in September 2016. His electroacoustic work, Hookean Elastics, was performed at the 2016 Sound and Music Computing Conference in Hamburg that same week.

Alumnus composer Eli Fieldsteel (MM 2010) has accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Composition-Theory at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he will serve as the Director of the Experimental Music Studios and teach courses in electroacoustic composition and engineering.

Composition/flute faculty member Elizabeth McNutt recently performed contemporary compositions at the National Flute Association Convention in San Diego, CA on 11-14 August 2016. She performed solo and ensemble pieces on the John Fonville Tribute concert, performed short commissioned works for flute and piano, and performed in an "all-star" flute choir for a Katherine Hoover surprise event.

Alumna composer Elainie Lillios (DMA 2000) was one of twelve recipients of the prestigious 2016 Barlow Endowment Commission, to compose a new work for the new music ensemble Bent Frequency.

Alumnus Daniel Sabzghabaei (BM 2014) was especially active and productive during the summer 2016. He was a production intern at the Ojai Music Festival (Ojai, CA, 9-12 June), where he worked alongside artistic director Peter Sellars, as well as festival artists Kaija Saariaho, Roomful of Teeth, and Claire Chase and the International Contemporary Ensemble, among others. He was a Composer and Vocal Fellow for the 2016 Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium (26 June - 7 July), where he collaborated with soprano Estelí Gomez on a performance of a scene from his opera The Holy Courtesan. He was also Composer-In-Residence for the 2016 ICon Arts Academy (20-30 July), where his newly-commissioned work, Two Reflections on The Belovéd for soprano and percussion quartet, was premiered by the ICon Arts Percussion Group, conducted by acclaimed Romanian percussionist Mircea Ardeleanu, with soprano Veronica Anușca.

Jonathan Camacho (BA 2008) recently composed the film score for the movie Destination: Team USA, a collaboration between United Airlines, Tribeca Digital Studios and Resonance Story Company. The film is the first to be commissioned by a U.S.-based airline and the first film to be premiered on a U.S. airline flight. The movie will run as the in-flight movie on all United Airlines flights for 3 months starting 1 July 2016. Jonathan also produced and co-wrote the song for the end credits, titled "Higher Stronger," which features Moses Uvere and Sarah Sellers (American Idol Season 10).

Graduate composer Bihe Wen's work Ancient Reunion was one of three prizewinners in the Radiophonic Composition/Sound Art category of Leibnizharmonies Composition Competition 2016. Prize winners were awarded by the Mayor of Hannover in Herrenhausen Gardens on 30 June 2016.

Composition alumnus Jason Fick (PhD 2012) was recently appointed Assistant Professor and Director of Music Technology at Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR), beginning in the fall 2016. Jason previously served as Associate Professor of Audio Production at the Art Institute of Dallas.

Works by graduate composers Bihe Wen and Michael Smith, as well as alumnus Dave Gedosh (DMA 2009), are among 24 works selected from 289 submissions from around the world for the ARS ELECTRONICA FORUM WALLIS 2016, to be held in Switzerland in May.

Doctoral composer Stephen Lucas has had an unprecedented streak of album releases over the last several months, resulting in over 20 solo albums under the moniker "Stephen Lucas Live at Brussels." His most successful publication received a positive review from the American rock band Stone Temple Pilots (STP) on major social media outlets. His long-time/distance collaborator/engineer Dairy Tade was recently nominated by the Panini Quartet to be the most successful dairy farmer/engineer in Northwest England.

Undergraduate Composer Sam Mikulewicz's work Himawari was selected for performance at the April 2016 Sound Of Dragon Chinese Music Festival in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Sam was one of ten composers selected among entries from twelve countries, and the only American composer whose work was selected for performance.

Undergraduate composer Ryan Ayres received Second Prize in the 2016 Voices of Change Young Composers Competition for his work twitch; composition alumnus Blake Turner (BM 2014) received an Honorable Mention for his work Elusive Trails.

Doctoral composer Ermir Bejo received a 2016 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award for his work Opus 4 for solo piano. Ermir was one of 15 recipients from a pool of over 700 submissions for this prestigious award. Composition alumnus Daniel Sabzghabaei (BM 2014) was also named among the finalists.

Faculty composer Panayotis Kokoras will present the keynote lecture and a concert of his works at the National Student Electronic Music Event (N_SEME) on 25-26 March 2016 at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK.

Elizabeth McNutt performed four works, including two by UNT faculty, at the International Computer Music Conference, hosted by UNT. She recently received a grant from the Earle Brown Music Foundation, in support of her series Sounds Modern, for upcoming performances in Dallas and Fort Worth (2016 and 2017). Her recent collaborations include premieres by Andrew May and local composer Sungji Hong.

Alumnus composer Daniel Sabzghabaei (BM 2014) was one of four composers selected by the choral ensemble Magpies and Ravens for their LINEAGE program. Daniel will receive mentoring from composer Paul Rudoi and the ensemble, culminating in two performances of his work Delbaré for SATB a cappella choir on 12-13 March 2016 in Minneapolis, MN.
